Break free from neurotypical boxes – and reveal your creativity

Autistic children have unique viewpoints and different ways of processing information. They, therefore, often find the traditional school environment challenging.

The education system is designed, primarily, for learners with mainstream brain functioning (neurotypical). Being neurodivergent means having a brain that works differently from the average, and these learners are often forced into ill-fitting moulds, worsening the difficulties they already face. As a result, many autistic learners encounter obstacles that can lead to anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues.

We, at Capulum College, allow our learners to break free from neurotypical boxes. Here we address these challenges because we recognise and celebrate the unique strengths and perspectives of autistic learners. We create an inclusive and supportive learning environment. We tailor teaching methods to accommodate the various learning styles, provide sensory-friendly spaces, and foster understanding among peers. This contributes to a more positive educational experience for autistic children, who do not conform to neurotypical behaviour, because being forced into neurotypical boxes can stifle creativity, hinder communication, and impede the ability to learn in ways that align with their intellectual preferences.

The pressure to conform and meet the expectations of a mainstream education can create a constant state of stress. The fear of social rejection and the challenges of navigating social interactions that may not support their understanding further contribute to the mental-health struggles faced by these learners. The long-term impact of such anxiety can result in depression that can affect their academic performance as well as their overall well-being.

The struggle to ‘fit in’ often leads to dysregulation. The gap between their unique sensory experiences and the sensory demands of the classroom environment can result in heightened stress levels and emotional dysregulation. Sensory overload, a common challenge for many autistic learners, can make the school setting overwhelming, contributing to a sense of frustration and discomfort.

Mental health support is part of the educational process at Capulum College. We prioritise the well-being of autistic learners by creating safe spaces for expression and implementing strategies to lessen stress-related situations. Our professional team understands the needs of autistic learners, so we promote an environment that values differences and fosters a sense of belonging. By embracing neurodiversity, adapting teaching methods, and prioritising mental health support, we can create a more inclusive and enriching educational experience for children with autism, empowering them to thrive academically and emotionally.
