SERVICES
The children who come to Capulum College are often not accommodated in either mainstream or special needs schools. So for children with average to above average abilities and who have learning issues such as ADHD, ADD, dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, mild to moderate autism, anxiety, language processing disorders, sensory issues or those who have experienced trauma of some kind whether this be bullying or illness, Capulum College is a place to take stock and start again.
All our children are made to feel special and important. They are treated with dignity and given any additional support they may need. We believe that as the ‘Capulum family’ and with the commitment and involvement of parents, we can assist in helping to make the future more exciting.
Having a multi-dimensional specialist team ensures that we can follow a neurodiverse approach, ensuring that all students are included, catered for, and supported according to their needs. All therapies are available in-house, and your child will benefit from therapists and teachers working together according to an individualised development plan. Our classes cater to a variety of students, from those who need a learning assisted environment, to those requiring specialised IEP classes offering advanced remedial support.
NEURODIVERSE APPROACH
All people have different strengths and weaknesses, and all students learn in different ways. We do not apply a blanket approach, but rather specialise in assisting a child to overcome their challenges while building on their strengths. In so doing, we have created a community within which our students can develop to their maximum potential in a safe and supportive environment, allowing them to thrive during and beyond their school years.

AUTISM UNIT
The Autism Unit uses the DIR model (Developmental, Individual Difference, and Relationship Based) to work with our children. In essence this means that we believe that a trusting relationship between the child and care givers is imperative for any learning or development to take place.
When a child is accepted into the school, a careful Individual profile is built which incorporates information gleaned from a multi-disciplinary team of therapists including Speech Therapists, Occupational Therapists and where applicable, Educational psychologists and doctors.
From this the team is able to support the child to the best of his or her Individual needs. The class facilitator works with the children daily in individual sessions using an IDP (Individual Developmental Plan). The plan outlines goals for each child. We continually assess and work on a developmental ladder which begins at the roots with Regulation. Once the child is regulated, we ensure the child is able to be engaging, then extend that engagement towards building a back and forth flow of communication, whether it be verbal or non-verbal. We want the child to feel that they are understood and can be powerful when becoming intentional in their form of communication.
Effective communication builds onto shared problem solving. This may look different for each child depending on their Individual profile. If postural control and motor planning are challenging then these tasks will be learnt through whole body movement.
If a child has achieved these levels they move up the ‘developmental ladder’ towards symbolic play, which is essential for a child to understand the world around them. All of these levels build onto each and children must be successful at these levels before academic learning which incorporates reading for meaning, writing, logical thinking and reasoning, empathy, the ability to form and express an opinion etc.
Throughout the day, different groups of children within Autism Unit will be actively involved and in the care of teacher aides. They will be using materials and activities to stimulate other areas of development such as puzzles, fine motor activities, cutting, and pencil work, imaginative and sensory play.
