Anticipation can be exciting or it can be overwhelming

Depending on how your child with special needs processes change, anticipation can be exciting or it can be overwhelming. For many, waiting for something to happen involves managing uncertainty, coping with expectations, and controlling emotional regulation.

Some children struggle to understand abstract ideas such as future events. A birthday party next week, a school outing tomorrow, or a visit to the doctor can be confusing. Emotional responses to anticipation vary. Some children become overly excited and struggle to regulate their behaviour, while others feel fearful. Without a clear sense of time, the anticipation may lead to repeated questioning or concern about the upcoming event. These reactions reflect a need for support, and this means understanding from you as a parent, as you manage your child’s feelings.

For children with autism spectrum disorder, delays, or motor impairments, anticipation can impact on daily routines, social interactions, and learning. This is generally because the child cannot sense how the experience will feel. For children who rely on structure and routine:

  • visual schedules,
  • the time to prepare
  • countdowns,
  • and clear explanations can help make future events feel more manageable.

anticipationKnowing what will happen, in what order, and what is expected of them provides a sense of control and security. Repetition and preparation are key tools in helping children with special needs cope with the future experiences. It is suggested that you pause for 5–10 seconds after an explanation to give the child processing time to plan a response

With thoughtful guidance, what initially might have felt overwhelming could become an opportunity for growth, confidence, and positive engagement with the world around your child.

Anticipation is the heart of wisdom. If you are going to cross a desert, you anticipate that you will be thirsty, and you take water." — Mark Helprin
