Home schooling for learners with educational needs

Home schooling, studying online or traditional classroom learning?

– see our testimonials –

As with most choices there are advantages and disadvantages to the options.

For learners with special educational needs, however, the answer to home schooling or online studying is a resounding NO…

Home schooling for learners with educational needsA two-year test emphasises the fact that parents have neither the time, the patience nor the skills to work with children with special needs. Training and experience are required because, for example, learners with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, anxiety and other learning problems don’t have the focus required to watch an online video and will often not keep up with what is being taught. “During Covid-19 lockdown we sent home online learning material that parents sent back, either incomplete or partially completed, and sometimes incorrect,” reported a special-needs teacher. “Serious time commitment and skills are required to keep going.”

Most special-need learners find it difficult to study alone. They need the face-to-face contact with a teacher and other students in a classroom setting. For them, the traditional classroom setting is an effective way to gain knowledge and skills because it combines different ways of learning including writing, reading, discussion, presentations, projects, group work, film clips, demonstration and practice.

Home schooling for learners with educational needsSome of the advantages of classroom learning include:

  • less distraction than at home
  • a greater understanding of stories, and real-world examples from teachers and other learners
  • the opportunity to connect with, problem-solve, and network with learners from a range of backgrounds.

Written testimonials are useful tools when making choices – and your child’s future may depend on that choice. The following testimonials highlight the success of special-needs teaching methods.

Finding the right high school for Peter was a nightmare which was very frustrating as they just could not see his potential. He enrolled at Capulum College and has matriculated. We would first like to express our gratitude for the time and patience the educators and staff of Capulum College have given to our son. We have seen and still continue to see improvement and progress with his social abilities, as well as his academic abilities as we see on the WhatsApp group, as well as feedback from educators.

Gift has now decided that he wants to use the skills he has learned from Capulum College on how to run a business and join these skills with sewing/tailoring that he wishes to learn soon. He wants to open a clothing business.
